At a glance

Eczema is a collective term for inflammation of the skin, which can have different causes and can look differently. Most forms, however, are accompanied by redness, itching, and small nodules and are not contagious. Eczema is the most common skin disease in Ireland.

Symptoms

Atopic eczema causes severe itching, skin changes and an uncomfortable feeling. The appearance depends heavily on the age of the person affected.

Treatments

Various ointments and creams are available from Irish GP such as cortisone treatment, which is highly effective, but it should always be used carefully to avoid the side effects. In the case of atopic dermatitis, so-called calcineurin inhibitors can also be used. Light therapy has also proved to be effective, however similar to unprotected sunbathing, it can also lead to an increased risk of skin cancer.
